When were your feet last happy? I mean really happy - no aches, no pains just... happy? when I was a kid, I had very sad feet; My shoes never fit. Ma used to say,"Children grow so fast-buy bigger shoes, they will grow in to them. Save money." So I was always flap, flap, flapping around in oversized shoes stuffed with extra socks. Then, on my eighth birthday, my aunt gave me these of new, shiny, black patent-leather pumps-you know, the type with the straps across-so soft, so comfortable, they actually fit! Then ma said," JI-ee spend so much you cannot anyhow wear them. Wait for Chinese new Year!" But ma.. Of course, when Chinese New Year cam, I'd outgrown them. So My perfect pumps were given to my younger sister to flap, flap, flap around in and show off to all the aunties and uncles. Twenty years later, I still don't own the perfect pair of shoes. Dress shoes especially, cos it's not easy to find my size. Incredible? Look, look closely at these feet, size 40,41 What do most stores here stock? Size 38 max, 39 if you're lucky! Now, I'm not saying you can't find size 40, 41 footwear in Singapore. You can. But each time I think I've found THE pair, I just wear the shoes ones or twice and then toe cramp, calluses, blisters, EXCUSE ME!, Kar-sng... Times like this I wish I were born a man and not have to bother with high heels or narrow toes. Why can't women wear wide cut flatties like men all the time? So I've given up my search for perfection. I just wear walking shoes to keep my feet happy. And two weeks ago, my sister-remember her who flap, flap, flapped around in my pumps twenty years ago- se suddenly screamed at me,"IF YOU DARE CLOMP AROUND MY WEDDING IN TRACK SHOES, I'LL KILL YOU! You either wear PROPER shoes or YOU. DON'T. COME!" Hey, just because you now have size 36 feet and can pick shoes off the displays doesn't mean you can tell me what shoes to wear. I'd RATHER miss your wedding! But for the sake of sisterly love and family solidarity, I went shoe shopping. I walked into every shoe shop, department store and shopping centre down orchard road and marina. Instead of finding the pair of simple, classic, comfortable all-black leather pumps with heels not too high or too low in size 40,41, what did I see? ANYTHING but what I had in mind. Three days before the wedding, I was going CRAZY! Where was I going to find the right shoes for my own sisters wedding? Then Ji-ee, my aunt gave me a tip," I tell you, every big footed tai-tai's secret shoes store is this place called dreams. It's in one corner of a certain hotel shopping arcade. Things will be a little expensive but you will find what you need there." Next day during lunch break, I checked it out. And there, there were my perfect shoes, that pair of simple, classic, comfortable all-black leather pumps with heels not too high nor too low in size 41! Handmade Italian, even! $3000! Plus GST! Then I saw a handbill on the counter. It said," Dreams annual one-day all-stock clearance 80% off sale tomorrow only" Hmm... 80% off $3000 would make... Clutching the handbill, I returned to the office and applied for emergency leave the next day!
